Broadview Heights' Peak Performance Center Opens Ohio's First Parisi Speed School

Press Release Body: June 15, 2008
Broadview Heights, OH-
Ray Kroc purchased his first McDonald's restaurant in 1954. Little did he know that
half a century later, he would be partially blamed for a 50% increase in childhood
obesity, dramatic increases in diabetes and an explosion of other chronic health
problems in today's youth.
Dr. John Collis, owner and founder of The Peak Performance Fitness Center in
Broadview Heights, is as passionate about fitness and training children as Kroc was
about hamburgers. Since opening Peak Performance Center 13 years ago, John has been
searching for the right program to best help children receive proper fitness
training, nutritional guidance and help build self-confidence. He believes he has
found the solution, the renowned Parisi Speed School, a performance enhancement
training school for children ages 7-18, the first of its kind in the State of Ohio.
The mission of the Parisi Speed School is to deliver a positive fitness training
experience that improves health and strengthens character of America's youth. Bill
Parisi, the founder of the Parisi Speed School, began this mission 17 years ago. A
former All-American track athlete, Bill realized the there were many limitations in
the way American athletes were training. As soon as his track career was over,
Parisi began training athletes and began collecting significant data on the progress
of these athletes. By 1997 he was working as a conditioning consultant for the New
York Giants while expanding his training of young athletes. As of this year, more
than 100,000 children have participated in the training.
"The data that comes with the Parisi Speed School is invaluable," Collis insists.
"We can follow and even predict how a student will progress based on history.
Parisi comes with an incredible track record which shows substantial improvement."
Collis has made significant investments to be the first Parisi Speed School in the
State of Ohio. His first decision was to recruit Nathan Turner from Austin, Texas
to be the Director of Training for the school. John met Nate through a close mutual
friend and as John states, "after spending 15 minutes with Nate I knew he was the
man for the position". In addition to nearly 20 years of training experience,
Turner was also the Strength and Conditioning Coach for 7 time Tour De France
Champion Lance Armstrong.
Collis' next decision was to fill in Peak Performance Center's 25 yard indoor pool
to house the new state-of-the-art Speed School. Being a former All-American
swimmer, member of the 1984 Greek Olympic Team and swim coach for the last 20 years,
the decision to fill in the pool was a difficult one for John to make. But once the
decision was made, there was no looking back. "I knew we would make a much bigger,
more positive impact on the health of our children with this new model," insists
John.
Just who can benefit from training at the Parisi Speed School? According to John
Collis, all kids. "Unfortunately, unstructured play and physical activity is at an
all time low for our children in the United States. Video games, the computer, TV
and reduced physical education requirements in school are all reasons for this
reduction in activity. It is no surprise why our children's health is so poor",
states Collis. At the other end of the spectrum, children as young as 7 years of age
are specializing in sports. Specializing this early without a foundation of
strength and fitness is what Collis terms as being "over-skilled and
under-conditioned" , which he believes is recipe for emotional burn-out and/or
injury . 75% of all kids playing sports in eighth grade will have stopped playing
sports by ninth grade. The solution to both of these alarming statistics is to
provide our children with a solid foundation of physical activity. "
"We do not teach the skill of the sport. Instead, our training builds a foundation
of skills that will enhance the needs of the sport," Nate Turner elaborates. "Parisi
teaches, speed, quickness, strength, agility, endurance, proper nutrition, proper
recovery and injury prevention. Plus, we do it with a huge dose of fun, not the
pressure that sometimes comes with competitive sports."
Nate offers an example of a child who is a soccer player. In the old paradigm, the
athlete would be told that to get better at soccer, he must practice the sport of
soccer as much as possible. In the Parisi paradigm, the athlete would be trained to
improve his or her strength, speed, agility and endurance-and then apply these
athletic skills to the sport itself.
The Parisi Speed School will help any child become more athletic. Weight lifting is
an important activity of the Parisi model, an activity that has confused parents for
years. John insists, "It is incorrect to believe that weight training is only for
children who have reached their teens. Parents will put their eight year old in full
pads and send them off to play tackle football, but won't let them participate in
lifting weights. The forces these young children will experience while playing their
sport are far greater than what they will experience in a safe, properly supervised
weight training environment".
Joint injuries are significantly on the rise in children," Collis continues. "Once
an injury is diagnosed, a doctor usually prescribes physical therapy for
rehabilitation of the injury. We believe in 'pre-habilitation', or training to
prevent injury."
Another injury on the rise is that of the ACL, the ligament in the center of the
knee joint. Many athletes use incorrect mechanics when slowing down or landing from
jumps, placing a heavy load on the ACL. This, coupled with a strength imbalance,
greatly increases the chances for an ACL injury. What's even more alarming, females
have a six fold greater chance than males for a non-collision ACL injury to occur.
The good news is that scientific studies have shown that athletes who participate in
a properly designed speed and strength training program are 88% less likely to
injure the ACL.
For kids who don't already have a love of sport, the creative drills and games that
are a part of every Speed School session lead them to enjoy the activities. "Sports
team coaches aren't always positive, but our performance coaches are," says Nate.
"We provide continuous positive reinforcement to build the self-esteem of those who
maybe didn't make the team or haven't yet found their niche. We want them to get
involved in some regular physical activity, even walking or biking, to help them
improve their health and fitness level."
New participants to the Parisi Speed School will first undergo a comprehensive
assessment, which enables the performance coach to properly place the athlete, not
only by age, but by skill level. Results are shared with parents and compared to the
data in the Parisi history. Recommendations for training are made based on need,
schedule and budget of the family.
Parisi students have a choice of two basic training programs, Sports Performance or
Total Conditioning. The Sports Performance model has been designed for athletes
looking for looking to reach the next level of play. Each session consists of
focused, semi-private training sessions of 3 to 6 students. Packages of 12 to 48
sessions can be purchased for at an average price of approximately $30/session
The Total Conditioning model is Parisi's newest training system and one that both
John and Nate are very excited about. This model is attractive to all children and
parents due to the flexible class structure and affordable price. In a nut shell,
Total Conditioning is Group Exercise utilitizing the Parisi signature training
systems. Classes are run daily for two different age groups, 7-12 and 13-18.
Scheduling to take these classes is not required and participation is unlimited for
a flat monthly fee of $89/month.
Performance coaches from the Parisi Speed School are available to train local
schools or community teams. "The great coaches spend their time teaching the
sport-specific skill and strategy of the sport. Our role is to assist the coach by
providing the additional physical and nutritional training needed for the athlete.
It is critical to the success of the athlete and the team that we follow the lead of
the team coach," John describes.
Don't be overly confident now that McDonalds has added the option of fruit to their
happy meal. Our children are in need of much more to ensure them a long and happy
life.
The Parisi Speed School is a great place to get them on the right track.
